The seminar method, which is central to the mission of The Agora Foundation, is very different from the educational experience of most people. Tutors, who help to guide the discussion, do not lecture about the meaning of the texts; rather they ask probing questions which, after careful discussion, help to illuminate the power of the ideas that arise in the discussion. The great books of civilization, from the ancient Hindus and Greeks to the present, contain some of the best that has been thought and written about nature, human nature, and the divine. Whether it is a Greek tragedy by Sophocles or Aeschylus, The Bhagavad Gita, Aristotle’s Ethics, Dante’s Divine Comedy, or Darwin ’s The Origin of Species, such texts invite us to join in a great conversation about topics which transcend the particularities of the time and place in which these books were written.
In The Assassin, Derren asks - is it possible to hypnotise someone to carry out an assassination? The imprisoned killer of Robert Kennedy has claimed that the CIA programmed him to murder the senator. Are such claims remotely plausible, or just the stuff of conspiracy theorists? Derren looks for a profoundly suggestible member of the public, and secretly trains him to assassinate Stephen Fry. In The Gameshow, Derren hosts a fake game show designed to see how being anonymous and part of a crowd affects our sense of right and wrong. Filmed just before the British riots took place, this show offers a dark insight into mob mentality. An unwitting member of the public, out on a Friday night, must suffer the consequences of decisions made by a studio audience watching his every move.. In The Guilt Trip, an unsuspecting 'nice guy' is invited to take part in what purports to be a seminar in an old country hotel. He has no idea that everyone he meets is an actor, and that he is taking part in a TV show designed to see if he can be made to admit to a murder he did not commit. Even his hero, Tim Minchin, is in on the game. A weekend from hell awaits him.... In The Secret of Luck, an entire town is the subject of Derren's experiment. With the help of journalist Dawn Porter, a rumour is spread in a remote town that a local statue of a dog brings good luck. As the story takes hold amongst the townsfolk, we see what really separates lucky from unlucky people and how we can create good luck for ourselves. The journey culminates in one man betting his entire life-savings on the roll of a dice.

As you travel through this audiobook, you will encounter attacks on resurrection ranging from Judaism, which swears it never happened; to Jehovah's Witnesses, who suggest that Jesus' physical body dissolved into gasses; and to Jesus Seminar fellows, who say that resurrection is wishful thinking. When you reach your destination, however, you will have encountered all the evidence necessary to demonstrate not only that Christ's resurrection is an immutable fact of history, but that your physical resurrection is just as certain. Along the way, you'll find answers to a host of frequently asked questions, such as: Are reincarnation and resurrection mutually exclusive? Would a good God really create a ghastly place like hell? If heaven is perfect, won't it be perfectly boring? Will pets be resurrected? Can souls really survive without bodies and brains? Will there be sex after the resurrection? What age will our resurrected bodies be? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Hank Hanegraaff. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/tnwd/000033/bk_tnwd_000033_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Pecan City, Texas, is a quiet, uneventful town. Hartley Gorman is a sedate, fundamentalist college (although a dean was murdered there once - in Bill Crider's One Dead Dean). English professor Carl Burns is about to begin yet another year in such a place, with only the eccentricities of his fellow teachers to entertain him. Even Burns, perpetual worrier that he is, envisions the worst of his problems to be the pigeons that have roosted in the attic above his office and the uninspired students that have enrolled for his classes. But what Burns hasn't counted on is the Edward Street Seminar, a conference that Burns has been assigned to run, which honors one Edward Street, former HGC professor and, lately, Hollywood celebrity. When Street comes back to Hartley Gorman and proceeds to offend everyone in town, and then turns up dead in his motel room, there is no shortage of suspects and Burns really begins to worry! 1.
