Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the effects of control mechanisms on a platform. First, the theoretical background of important terms in this field is given to gain a common understanding, which is necessary for classification as well as results. In this thesis, platforms are defined as products and services, which bring together user groups and enable transactions between the groups by providing infrastructure to do so. Second, literature dealing with this field of study is processed to provide a comprehensive and transparent overview about current research, including the platform type, dependent variables, and findings. Input, output, process, clan, self-control, as well as open and closed platforms, rules & values and boundary resources are identified as the most relevant control mechanisms. Thereby the first research question what types of control mechanisms are discussed in literature, is answered. The findings then are analyzed for these different types of control to address the remaining research questions how control mechanisms effect platforms and when this is useful. It can be pointed out that most mechanisms go along with advantages and disadvantages, as theory suggests. Thus, decision makers have to be clear about the goal they want to achieve when changing platform governance or control to use these effects for their advantage. If a platform aims at optimizing e.g. the degree of openness, this depends on the question: what is optimal for the platform? As ecosystems typically face the trade-off between quality (e.g. apps) and quantity (e.g. number of users), platform owners have to strategically position the platform somewhere along this continuum. The finding that some control mechanisms are superior to others for achieving certain goals, however, can directly be beneficial to managers. Also, the methods applied by the studies are analyzed, coming to the conclusion that case studies represent the predominant method in this field. Lastly, the results are discussed, contributions and limitations of this work are considered. Also, shortcomings and research gaps in this field are highlighted and future research areas are exemplified. Especially the conduction of an event study and adopting a more strategic approach are intriguing for a master thesis to fully cover the implications of managers' decision regarding platform ecosystems.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: noch nicht bekannt, , language: English, abstract: In 2008 a promise of hope and change, especially for Americans, but also for all others went around the world. 'Yes, We Can' was a synonym for the 'American Dream'. It was first said by a candidate of the Democratic Party, who wanted to become the first African American president. But Obama was not the first politician, who wanted to follow the citizen's wish for improvement of an old system and more humanity. Fourty six years before, another man told all Americans, that 'We Can Do Better'. The meaning and choice of words is quite similar. Both talked about solidarity, a wind of change and equality of all people, because 'We' means everybody without exceptions. But is it only the slogan, which shows similarities of both or do they have more in common than this? And why is research and knowledge about it necessary? In my opinion we should have a constant awareness and knowledge about failures and procedures in the past, also in foreign affairs, in view of their influence on our current and future situation. As the biggest economic and military power, the United States of America have had huge influence on Europe and the rest of the world. To understand and analyse America's policy, it is best to focus on its head of state, the president. So, I concentrated on the current democratic president Barack Obama by comparing him to the former democratic president John F. Kennedy. Often Barack Obama is called the black Kennedy, as a person on whom hopes are focused like on Kennedy in the past. To analyse more deeply, biographies made by their companions and contemporary journalists are needed. Internet platforms and blogs give also interesting insights and points of criticism, which are partly sabotaged by public authorities or by the Kennedy Clan. By enquiry on the current president a very low amount of information about his private life and his background is officially known.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Russia, grade: A, OSCE Academy, course: Electoral Systems and Political Parties, language: English, abstract: Given the fact that none of the international declarations, conventions or covenants establishes a type of electoral or party systems, which is more democratic than others, it is a sole prerogative of a sovereign state to decide, which system to follow - majoritarian, proportional representation, mixed, or any other - while starting or continuing the process of democratization. The problem is that incumbent politicians can manipulate the electoral system in such a way as to ensure victory during next elections to preserve their power. Kyrgyzstan is precisely such a case. Although, during 14 years of country's independence the electoral system has undergone major transformations three times, the current electoral system can hardly be named democratic. Furthermore, after the Kyrgyz opposition took over power on 24th March, 2005, one of the first requirements of the civil society was revision of the constitution, including reformation of the electoral system. Having come across The New International IDEA Handbook on Electoral System Design, it became increasingly interesting for me to make an attempt to design the electoral system for Kyrgyzstan to make it more democratic. Apart from using the handbook on Electoral System Design, the methods of research include analysis of reports of international organizations such as OSCE and ICG related to the topic. Hypothesis of the author is the following. In order to 'democratize' Kyrgyzstan, i.e. to make the decision-making process more inclusive, to ensure that majority of voices is heard, and to secure that regional, clan and minorities' interests are taken into account, it is necessary, inter alia, to introduce Parallel electoral system, i.e. half of the seats in the parliament is to be elected by FPTP run-off in single-member constituencies while the other half of the seats is to be elected by PR closed party lists.
